On Thursday, October 29th, L’Oréal Levant, One Wig Stand and Roula Karam Face Couture, held an empowering beauty and style event for cancer patients under the title of “Jamelik bi Ouwtik” (Your Strength is Your Beauty) at The Smallville Hotel in Badaro.
The event kicked off with a few words by representatives of each of the organizers on the importance of providing patients with the resources to help them look, and as a result, feel better about themselves during treatment, especially in our part of the world where women undergoing treatment fear being defined by their sickness and the reactions of others. This drastically affects their self-confidence and how they cope during this already sensitive period.
Mimo Rakha, who is currently completing her breast cancer treatment, shared her touching testimony of endurance and cited that her self-confidence, faith and presence of loved ones by her side has been the best medicine during this period. “There’s no reason a patient should feel she is less than anyone else”, she stressed too, encouraging patients to keep taking care of their appearance especially during this period.
A panel discussion, led by award-winning TV presenter and journalist Riwa Al-Atrash, delved deeper into the topics of interest to patients and provided the audience an opportunity to ask any questions from the team of specialists, which included:
• Dr. Toni Nassar: Plastic Surgeon
• Monique Bassila Zaarour: Nutritionist and Dietician
• Stephanie Ghanem: Psychologist
• Maya-Jules Haddad: Fashion Stylist
• Nada Arabi Majdalani: Cancer Survivor
Following the panel discussion, patients and survivors present took part in workshops on how they may cope with chemotherapy’s harsh side-effects through practical tips. The workshop sessions included:
• Skin Care with La Roche-Posay Expert
• Make-up, Eyebrows and Lashes with Roula Karam
• Wig Styling and Care with Tarek Rizk
• Fashion and Styling with Maya-Jules Haddad
Patients learned how to stylishly wrap a headscarf, how to care for their wigs during treatment, how to draw natural-looking eyebrows, how to care for their skin during chemotherapy… among many other topics! The patients quickly connected with each other, sharing their own experiences in the process, and benefited greatly from the knowledge shared. Friends and family of patients were also present, gaining added insight on how they may support their loved ones during this period.
“Jamelik bi Ouwtik” was a special reminder to all the patients present that they are beautiful no matter what they may be going through and the role something as little as a dash of blush can do towards reflecting the inner glow of a cancer fighter.
