RIP iTunes: Apple sets end date for its online music store
(HighTech) 5 years ago

Apple is set phase iTunes out for good by this time next year as it looks towards is burgeoning streaming service, Apple Music.

Media outlets stateside report that the tech giant's popular online music store will stop taking album submissions later this month and will be shut down by March 31, 2019.

The iTunes platform will continue to be supported, so you can manage your media collection and sync it with your iPod, if you still have one.

.

Users will still be able to play songs, movies and TV shows bought from iTunes through iTunes and on Apple devices, but the decision makes clear that streaming has conquered paid downloads.

Apple Music executive Jimmy Iovine said two weeks ago that Apple Music needed to diversify it was to overtake market leader Spotify in terms of paid streaming subscriptions.

‘The streaming services are all charging $9.99 and everyone has the same music,’ he told the BBC.

.

‘And it’s really nice. You get whatever song you want, you get your playlists, but there’s got to be more interaction between the artist and the audience.

‘Sooner or later, something’s got to give,’ he said, indicating that Apple Music wanted more original content. ‘Netflix [is] spending $6bn a year on original content. They have a unique catalogue and they charge you $10.99.’

His comments may indicate where he sees the future for Apple Music, which has 36m premium subscribers, around half the number that pay for Swedish upstart Spotify.

.

Apple is making inroads in the US, where it is expected to overtake Spotify in terms of paid subscribers this summer.

Spotify, meanwhile, made its successful debut on the stock exchange last weekwith share prices increasing 13pc by the end of it initial public offering (IPO) as it also seeks to become the Netflix of music.

The iTunes Store was launched in 2003 and had sold 35bn songs by 2014, with annual revenues of nearly $1.4bn and 575m active users at its peak.
